A fun and festive Halloween appetizer featuring hot dogs wrapped in crescent roll dough with cheese eyes, creating a spooky mummy look that is quick to make and loved by kids and adults alike.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 to 10 standard beef or turkey hot dogs
  • 1 can (8 oz) refrigerated crescent roll dough
  • 1 cup sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 1 large egg beaten with 1 tablespoon water or milk
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter
  • Poppy seeds or black sesame seeds (optional, for pupils)
  • Paprika (for dusting)
  • Mustard or ketchup (for serving)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Butterfly the hot dogs lengthwise, cutting almost all the way through but leaving a hinge so they can open flat.
  3. Unroll the crescent roll dough and press perforated seams together to form a single sheet.
  4. Wrap strips of dough around each butterflied hot dog, leaving small gaps to create the mummy look.
  5. Cut cheddar cheese into small squares or circles and place two pieces on each hot dog for eyes.
  6. If using, place a poppy seed or black sesame seed in the center of each cheese square for the pupil.
  7. Brush the dough strips lightly with the egg wash mixture.
  8. Bake for 12-15 minutes until the dough is golden brown and the cheese is melted.
  9. While hot, brush the tops with melted butter.
  10. Lightly sprinkle paprika over the hot dogs for color and flavor.
  11. Let cool for 2-3 minutes before serving with mustard or ketchup.

Notes

For best results, shred your own cheese to avoid anti-caking agents that prevent melting. If using dark-colored baking sheets, reduce oven temperature by 25°F. These can be assembled ahead and refrigerated for up to 24 hours before baking. Reheat leftovers in the oven at 350°F for 10 minutes to restore crispiness.
