A fun and spooky Halloween appetizer featuring string cheese wrapped in flaky puff pastry, baked until golden brown, and decorated with olive eyes.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1215 sticks of string cheese (mozzarella)
  • 1 package frozen puff pastry sheets, thawed
  • 1 large egg beaten with 1 tablespoon water or milk (for egg wash)
  • Sliced black olives or candy eyes (for decoration)
  • Sesame seeds or poppy seeds (optional, for pupils)
  • Butter (optional, for brushing)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Line two large baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. Thaw puff pastry according to package instructions. Ensure it is pliable but cold. Roll out slightly if needed for even thickness.
  3. Cut the puff pastry into strips approximately 1 inch wide and long enough to wrap around the string cheese.
  4. Take a string cheese and wrap the pastry strips around it, starting at the bottom and going up. Leave a small gap at the top for the face. Overlap strips slightly to create a bandage look.
  5. Place two slices of black olive or candy eyes on the front of the mummy in the gap. Press gently to adhere. Add a tiny dot of sesame seed for a pupil if desired.
  6. Lightly brush the pastry strips with the egg wash, avoiding the eyes to prevent burning.
  7. Place mummies on the prepared baking sheets, leaving space between them for expansion.
  8. Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown and puffed up.
  9. Remove from oven and let cool on a wire rack for at least 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

Keep the puff pastry cold while wrapping to ensure it rises properly and doesn’t stick. Do not overcrowd the baking sheet. If bottoms are soggy, use heavier baking sheets. Can be frozen raw before baking; add 2-3 minutes to cook time if baking from frozen.
