This easy loaded football field taco dip is a fun and impressive game day appetizer that looks like a football field. It’s a quick, no-bake layered dip with refried beans, sour cream, and fresh toppings that’s perfect for parties.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 16 oz can refried beans
  • 1 packet (about 1 oz) taco seasoning
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • ½ cup sour cream (for stripes)
  • 2 cups finely chopped shredded lettuce
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • ½ cup sliced black olives
  • ½ cup pico de gallo or diced tomatoes
  • ¼ cup sliced green onions
  • 810 pretzel sticks
  • Mini football-shaped candies or small plastic football (optional)
  • Tortilla chips (for serving)

Instructions

  1. Mix the base layer: In a medium bowl, combine the refried beans with half of the taco seasoning packet (about 1 tablespoon). Stir until smooth. If the beans are too thick to spread, add a tablespoon of water to loosen them up. Spread this mixture evenly onto your rectangular platter, forming a rectangle shape about 8×12 inches. It should be about ½ inch thick. Set it aside.
  2. Make the sour cream layer: In a separate small bowl, mix the 1 cup of sour cream with the remaining taco seasoning. Stir until the color is uniform and the seasoning is fully incorporated. Spread this mixture evenly over the refried bean layer. Use a spatula to smooth it out. You want it to cover the beans completely.
  3. Create the field markings: Take the additional ½ cup of plain sour cream and spoon it into a piping bag or a zip-top bag. Snip a tiny corner off the bag. Pipe thin lines across the width of the dip to represent the yard lines. I usually make about 5-6 lines, spaced evenly. You can also pipe a line down the center for the 50-yard line, and two shorter lines near each end zone.
  4. Add the ‘grass’ layer: Sprinkle the finely chopped shredded lettuce evenly over the entire surface of the dip. Make sure it covers the sour cream layer completely, but avoid piling it too thick. You want to see the white stripes peeking through. Gently press the lettuce down with your fingers so it stays in place.
  5. Add the toppings: Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese in two strips along the sides of the dip, like the sidelines of a football field. Then add the black olives in clusters to represent players or just scattered across the field. Add the pico de gallo or diced tomatoes in small piles. Sprinkle the sliced green onions over the top for a little extra color.
  6. Build the goalpost: Take the pretzel sticks and arrange them at one end of the dip to form a goalpost. Use two pretzel sticks for the uprights, standing vertically, and one for the crossbar, placed horizontally across the top. You may need to break a pretzel stick to get the right length for the crossbar. Press the bottom of the uprights gently into the dip so they stay standing.
  7. Chill and serve: Place the assembled dip in the refrigerator for at least 15-20 minutes before serving. This helps the layers set and makes it easier to scoop. When you are ready to serve, place the platter on a large serving tray surrounded by tortilla chips. Add a small plastic football or a mini football candy on the field for the full effect.

Notes

Drain all wet ingredients (pico de gallo, olives) to prevent sogginess. Let refried beans come to room temperature for easier spreading. Chill for at least 15-20 minutes before serving to help layers set. Can be assembled up to 4 hours in advance; add goalpost just before serving. For a lighter version, swap sour cream for Greek yogurt.
