These easy football-shaped sugar cookies are perfect for game day parties. With a soft, buttery texture and simple chocolate laces, they’re a crowd-pleasing treat that’s surprisingly simple to make.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup (150g) granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups (250g) all-purpose flour, spooned and leveled
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup (90g) semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 teaspoon coconut oil or vegetable shortening
  • 1/4 cup white chocolate chips (optional, for stripes)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, beat the softened butter and granulated sugar together until light and fluffy—about 3 minutes with an electric mixer. Scrape down the sides halfway through.
  3. Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until fully combined. The mixture might look slightly curdled; that’s normal.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add this to the wet mixture, mixing on low speed until just combined. Do not overmix.
  5. Lightly flour your work surface and rolling pin. Roll the dough to about 1/4-inch thickness. If sticky, dust with a little more flour. Alternatively, roll between two sheets of parchment paper.
  6. Press a football-shaped cookie cutter (about 3 inches long) firmly into the dough and lift straight up. Re-roll scraps once. Place cutouts on prepared baking sheets, spacing them about 2 inches apart.
  7. Bake for 8-10 minutes, until edges are just barely golden. Centers will look slightly underdone. Let cool on baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a cooling rack.
  8. While cookies cool, combine chocolate chips and coconut oil in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave in 20-second bursts, stirring between each, until smooth and glossy. Let cool for 2-3 minutes until thick enough to pipe.
  9. Transfer ganache to a piping bag or zip-top bag with a tiny corner snipped off. Pipe a line down the center of each cookie, then add short perpendicular lines for the laces.
  10. Let cookies sit at room temperature for about 20 minutes (or refrigerate for 10 minutes) until chocolate is firm to the touch.

Notes

For sharper shapes, chill cutouts in the freezer for 15 minutes before baking. If ganache is too runny, let it cool longer. Cookies stay fresh up to 7 days in an airtight container at room temperature. For gluten-free, use a 1:1 gluten-free flour blend. For vegan, use vegan butter and a flax egg.
