A fun and spooky Halloween appetizer featuring mini sausages wrapped in flaky pastry strips to resemble mummies, served with a homemade spicy mustard dip. These are quick to make, crowd-pleasing, and perfect for parties.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2436 mini sausages or cocktail franks
  • 1 sheet puff pastry (thawed) or 1 can crescent rolls
  • 1 egg, beaten with 1 teaspoon water (for egg wash)
  • Sesame seeds or poppy seeds (for eyes)
  • Yellow mustard
  • Dijon mustard
  • Hot sauce (to taste)
  • Garlic powder
  • Butter, melted (optional, for brushing)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. Prepare the pastry: If using puff pastry, cut into 1-inch wide strips. If using crescent rolls, separate triangles or cut into strips.
  3. Wrap each mini sausage with a pastry strip, leaving small gaps to create the ‘mummy’ look. Place seam-side down on baking sheets, spacing 1 inch apart.
  4. Make two small slits on top of each mummy and press a sesame or poppy seed into each slit for eyes.
  5. Brush the tops lightly with the egg wash. Optionally brush with melted butter.
  6. Bake for 12-15 minutes until the pastry is puffed, golden brown, and crispy.
  7. Cool for 2-3 minutes before handling.
  8. While mummies cool, mix spicy mustard by combining yellow mustard, Dijon mustard, hot sauce, and a pinch of garlic powder.
  9. Serve warm with the spicy mustard on the side for dipping.

Notes

Keep the dough cold to ensure flaky layers. Do not wrap the dough too tightly; leave gaps for the sausage to cook. If baking from frozen, add 2-3 minutes to the cooking time. Reheat leftovers in the oven to restore crispiness.
