Golden, shatteringly crisp apple dumplings wrapped in flaky puff pastry and filled with spiced apples and brown sugar, baked to perfection with a cozy cinnamon caramel flavor.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 medium firm apples (Honeycrisp, Gala, or Fuji), peeled, cored, and cut into half-inch cubes
  • 1 sheet frozen puff pastry, thawed
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1 large egg, beaten with 1 tablespoon water
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Unsalted butter, melted (for brushing)
  • Optional: Caramel sauce or vanilla ice cream for serving

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, toss apple cubes with brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Let sit for 5 minutes to release juices.
  3. On a lightly floured surface, roll out the thawed puff pastry and cut into four equal squares.
  4. Place a generous spoonful of the spiced apple mixture in the center of each square.
  5. Brush the edges of the pastry with the egg wash mixture (egg, water, vanilla).
  6. Fold opposite corners over the filling to create triangles, or fold sides to make parcels. Press edges firmly to seal.
  7. Place dumplings seam-side down on the prepared baking sheet.
  8. Brush tops generously with remaining egg wash and melted butter.
  9. Bake for 25-30 minutes, rotating pan halfway through, until pastry is puffed and golden brown.
  10. Cool on the pan for 5 minutes before serving warm with caramel sauce.

Notes

Ensure the pastry is cold until it goes into the oven to ensure proper puffing. Do not overcrowd the baking sheet to allow for air circulation. For a gluten-free version, use certified gluten-free puff pastry. For a vegan version, use vegan puff pastry and brush with coconut milk instead of egg wash.
