A rich, velvety hot chocolate made in a slow cooker with cocoa powder, chocolate chips, and warming spices. Served as an interactive bar with customizable toppings for a spooky and cozy Halloween treat.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1.5 cups mini semi-sweet or dark chocolate chips
  • 4 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon sea salt
  • Whipped cream (for topping)
  • Mini marshmallows (for topping)
  • Crushed peppermint candies (for topping)
  • Pumpkin spice latte mix (for topping)
  • Chocolate shavings (for topping)

Instructions

  1. Rinse the slow cooker insert and place it in the base. Ensure it is clean and ready for use.
  2. Add the cocoa powder, granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, ginger, and sea salt to the slow cooker. Stir briefly to distribute spices evenly.
  3. Slowly pour in the whole milk, heavy cream, and vanilla extract while whisking gently to prevent cocoa clumping.
  4. Add the mini chocolate chips on top of the liquid mixture.
  5. Cover the slow cooker and set to LOW heat. Cook for 2 to 3 hours.
  6. After 2 hours, stir the mixture well to ensure chocolate is melted and ingredients are combined. Taste and adjust sweetness if needed.
  7. Switch the slow cooker to the WARM setting to keep the hot chocolate ready for serving for up to 2 hours.
  8. Set up a topping station with bowls of whipped cream, marshmallows, peppermint, and other desired toppings.
  9. Whisk the hot chocolate vigorously before ladling into mugs to ensure a uniform texture.
  10. Serve hot with chosen toppings.

Notes

Do not use HIGH heat as it can scorch the dairy and make the chocolate grainy. Stir regularly to prevent lumps and skin formation. If the mixture becomes too thick, add a splash of warm milk. For a dairy-free version, substitute milk and cream with full-fat canned coconut milk and use dairy-free chocolate chips. Leftovers can be stored in the fridge for up to 3 days; reheat gently on the stove.
