Best Homemade Eggnog: Easy 5-Min Nutmeg Bourbon Recipe

homemade eggnog - featured image

A rich, velvety homemade eggnog made with simple ingredients like egg yolks, cream, and bourbon. This recipe skips the custard cooking for a quick, safe, and comforting holiday drink with a luxurious texture.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 large egg yolks
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 1 cup bourbon
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon fresh nutmeg (plus more for garnish)
  • 1 large cinnamon stick (optional)

Instructions

  1. Separate eggs and place 6 yolks in a large mixing bowl. Add 1 cup granulated sugar and whisk vigorously until the mixture is pale yellow, thick, and the sugar is dissolved (about 2-3 minutes).
  2. Slowly pour in 2 cups whole milk while whisking constantly to prevent cooking the eggs. Add 2 cups heavy cream, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, and freshly grated nutmeg. If using, add the cinnamon stick. Whisk until fully combined.
  3. Cover the bowl tightly or transfer to a pitcher and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, preferably overnight, to allow flavors to meld.
  4. Remove from the fridge and discard the cinnamon stick if used. Pour in 1 cup bourbon and whisk gently to incorporate. Taste and adjust strength if desired.
  5. Return to the fridge for at least 30 more minutes to let the alcohol integrate.
  6. Serve cold in chilled glasses, garnished with a fresh sprinkle of nutmeg.

Notes

For food safety, use pasteurized eggs if concerned about salmonella. For a non-alcoholic version, omit the bourbon and replace with extra milk or cream. For a dairy-free option, use full-fat canned coconut milk. The flavors improve after 24 hours. Store in the refrigerator for up to 3 days; do not freeze.
